In February 2023, five members of the AACU participated as examiners for the ABU Certifying Examination (Oral Board Exam): Dr. William Reha, Dr. Peter Knapp, Dr. Lorie Fleck, Dr. Terrence Regan, and Dr. Thomas Herrick. Oral examiners were selected for their knowledge, ability to be fair and consistent, and clinical urology reputation. This required an intense 3-day sojourn to the AIME Center in Raleigh, NC, with long hours learning and delivering the protocols. Each of the AACU members found this to be an extremely rewarding and educational endeavor.
Expanding the examiner pool to more clinical urologists represent an effort by the ABU to involve a greater cross-section of Urologists in the certification process. While the majority of urologists in academic practice have a subs-specialty focus, urologists in non-academic practice, which is a large portion of AACU members, more commonly practice general urology and as such may have more familiarity with the breadth of topics that are incorporated into the ABU Certifying Examination.
