Urologists' Hill visits result in support for key bills

March 16, 2017 - Right on the heels of another successful round of meetings on Capitol Hill during the 2017 Joint Advocacy Conference in Washington (Gallery), many elected officials have signed on as cosponsors to four federal bills central to Urology’s legislative priorities.

In an effort to encourage the repeal of the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), urologists urged Representatives to cosponsor H.R. 849 and Senators to cosponsor S. 251 (Democrat version) and S. 260 (Republican version), all of which would permanently repeal the IPAB. Between March 1 and March 17, 18 Members of Congress signed on to H.R. 849, while 2 Senators joined their respective party's version in the upper chamber.

Another top legislative priority for Urology is reforming the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and preserving access to PSA-based prostate cancer screening. As such, urologists urged Representatives to cosponsor H.R. 539, the "USPSTF Transparency and Accountability Act of 2017."  Reps. Brad Wenstrup [R-OH-2] and Evan Jenkins [R-WV-3] joined on as cosponsors to the bill in the days following urologists' visits to the Hill.

Even though the 2017 Joint Advocacy Conference has come to a close, efforts to lobby Congress about these important bills are far from over.  With the April Congressional recess just weeks away, the AACU encourages urologists to continue lobbying their Representatives and Senators in their home towns.

Keep applying pressure...Please contact the AACU and UROPAC so staff can help schedule a visit with your Representative or Senator at your own practice or a brief meeting at a local coffee shop.

AACU/UROPAC staff will prepare you for these meetings by providing background information on the elected official and details on Urology’s federal priorities for the year.
